Destination guide

Last updated: June 15, 2026

One of the most stable and welcoming countries in West Africa — historic castles, highlife and the best jollof (don’t say that to a Nigerian). But there are clear entry rules to meet. Here is the essential, verified.

Travel essentials

European citizens need a visa, obtained before travel. ECOWAS citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Since 25 May 2026, Ghana grants a FEE-FREE e-Visa to all African passports (including Angola) — you still apply online, but pay nothing. Yellow fever is an entry requirement (see Health).

PassportEntry rule
Portugal · Spain · France · United KingdomVisa required (obtain before travel)
Cabo Verde · Guinea-Bissau · Nigeria · SenegalVisa-free — ECOWAS free movement
Angola (and other African passports)Fee-free e-Visa (pan-African policy, since 25 May 2026)

⚠️ Border rules change without notice. Always confirm with the official source (consulate, immigration, travel.state.gov, gov.uk, Portal das Comunidades) before travelling.

Health

A yellow fever certificate (ICVP) is MANDATORY — without it, you’ll be denied entry. Required for all travellers aged 9 months and over; the certificate must be at least 10 days old on arrival.

Passport

Passport valid for at least 6 months, with two blank pages.

Arrival & Safety

Airport

Kotoka International Airport (ACC, Accra) — the main gateway and one of the most efficient, modern hubs in West Africa.

Getting in

Uber, Bolt and Yango operate in Accra — safe, cheap and recommended over unmetered street taxis. There are also trotros (minibuses). For night arrivals, prefer a hotel transfer or a well-rated app.

Safety

Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution (US)

Ghana is one of the most stable and safe countries in the region (Level 2, US), but there is urban crime and localized instability. Watch for petty theft in markets, beaches and tourist areas; avoid roads at night off the main routes and follow local advice.

⚠️ Border rules change without notice. Always confirm with the official source (consulate, immigration, travel.state.gov, gov.uk, Portal das Comunidades) before travelling.

Money

Currency: Ghanaian cedi (GHS). Cards are accepted in Accra’s hotels and malls, but Mobile Money (MoMo) is king day to day. ATMs are common in cities; carry some cash for markets and small businesses.

eSIM plans

Refund guarantee: if the eSIM doesn't work at your destination, you get your money back.

Connectivity

MTN (the largest, with the widest 4G including rural areas), Telecel (formerly Vodafone), AirtelTigo and Glo. A local SIM requires biometric registration — the Verde Wave eSIM skips the queues and gives you instant data.

Mandatory biometric SIM registration is slow for arrivals. An eSIM activated before departure gives you secure connectivity the moment you land.

In Accra and Kumasi, WhatsApp, VoIP and social media work without restriction. Mobile Money (MoMo) is deeply integrated into the economy — from street vendors to utility bills.

Sending money Ghana

Sending money to Ghana is part of diaspora life. The usual options: bank transfer (slower and sometimes with hidden FX margins), specialist apps like Wise, Remitly and WorldRemit (fast and transparent on fees), and cash pickup via Western Union or MoneyGram. In Ghana, mobile money (MTN MoMo) is widely used — money can land straight in the phone wallet — or via cash pickup in cedis (GHS). Always compare the total cost — fee plus exchange-rate margin — and the speed before sending. Verde Wave never handles money; we just point you to the tools.

Sending boxes / cargo Ghana

Sending boxes, barrels or “Ghana Must-Go bags” to Ghana is a deep-rooted diaspora tradition — food, clothes, electronics and gifts for family. Shipping is almost always by sea (cheaper but slow — typically several weeks to a couple of months), with an air option (faster, pricier) for urgent items. The essentials: make a packing list with values for customs, clearly identify sender and recipient with a local contact, and check import duties — used personal effects may have allowances, but new or bulk goods are taxed. For Ghana, barrels and “Ghana Must-Go bags” are standard; check duties and use door-to-door services that handle clearance in Tema/Accra. Declare the contents honestly, avoid prohibited or poorly protected perishable items, and keep your receipts. Compare freight forwarders on reputation and insurance, not just price.

Practical tips

Best time

The best window is November to March, avoiding the humidity and torrential rains of the wet season — though the dry Harmattan wind can reduce visibility.

Languages

English is the official language. Twi (Akan) is the most widely spoken local language and the backbone of commerce; Ewe and Ga are also common depending on the region. See the phrasebook →

Etiquette

Greetings matter: greet warmly before getting to business. Always use your right hand to give, pay or eat — the left is traditionally considered unclean. Handshakes are warm and frequent, sometimes ending with a finger snap. Dress modestly away from tourist settings.

What to see & culture

Places

The Cape Coast and Elmina castles, tied to the history of the transatlantic slave trade; Kakum National Park, with its forest canopy walkway; Mole National Park, with elephants at very accessible prices; and Independence Square in Accra.

Culture

Ghanaian identity is tied to the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, the pan-Africanist independence leader. Evergreen touchstones: highlife music and kente cloth, hand-woven with meaning-rich patterns.

Food

Ghana jollof (in fierce rivalry with Nigeria), waakye (seasoned rice and beans), fufu with light soup and kelewele (spiced fried plantain) are iconic.
